About Us

The Karina Association, founded in March 2009, is a non-profit organization registered in the USA and Bulgaria.

A vital part of K.A.R.I.N.A.'s role is building acceptance and inclusion for everybody and seeking to develop and nurture a culture that takes community inclusion for granted. Knowledge, Awareness, Recognition, Inclusion, Nurturance, Acceptance. All of these factors nurture the social consciousness of the community. These principals further the development of strategies for social inclusion of the disabled people.

We would like to create an organization that will service the disabled communities in giving them every resource to achieve so they don't have to live a life of terminal underachievement. This is to give parents peace of mind that they know their children will have the tools to dictate their own fate. We need all inclusive, passionate and empathetic hearts of others to make our organization a profound reality for the families with disabled children. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of these children, young adults, and their families please join our cause.

Biliana Borimetchkova, President and Founder, was born in Bulgaria and now lives in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. In Bulgaria she worked as a costume designer for the Bulgarian National Film Studio.  In 1991, Biliana came to the US to study at Gordon College, Wenham, MA.

She graduated with a major in Christian Theology and started a ministry with Slavic immigrants in the Baltimore-Washington metro area. She has volunteered at the Pregnancy Crisis Center in Baltimore. She works with young adults who are disabled and helps them with their daily routines. After watching the documentary movie Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children from BBC journalist Kate Blewett, Biliana’s life was changed completely and she started a children’s ministry to help these abandoned and disabled children in her native country.  She established the non-profit organization Karina Association, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, in order to bring awareness to the public about the critical situation of these forgotten children in state institutions in Bulgaria. She is working to establish medical and rehabilitation help for these children, so they can be removed from institutions to small group homes and to give them a better future.
Biliana’s vision is to raise public awareness about the needs of abandoned and disabled children around the world including the U.S.A. Her work with disabled young adults inspired her to start a special program for supporting families affected by disabilities and their children in Baltimore area. The same program is applied in Bulgaria.
